As we welcome in the Year of the Rat in China, it seems the ecological world is welcoming in with open arms the idea of human-centric ecosystems, or anthromes as they are fondly called by some. In the latest development, researchers at the University of Colorado, Boulder have called for ecologists to change how they view ecosystems. I quote: “The reality is that enormous environmental changes are happening very rapidly, and in many cases, there is very little we can do about them. We think the trick now is to accept, preserve and enhance these novel ecosystems and do what we can to shield them from further changes.” The study appears in Frontiers in Ecology and Environment.
