Global malaria data

Another decent global data source, this time on malaria.  The Malaria Atlas Project have just released the first map of malaria for over 40 years, providing some surprises.  The kind MAPers have put together a spiffy Google Earth interface for viewing it.  I haven’t spotted a way of downloading the data for import into a GIS, but I might have just missed it.

This post says there is an “ArcGrid file at 0.1 degree spatial resolution”. Is that the kind of thing you need?

I agree that the the map is a nice visual….showing what? The number of people are sacrifice each day to malaria. Why do we seem to know so much about an eradicable disease, and we achieve to little? What is the course of this relevance paradox in global health delivery?
